Wind Breaker Live Action Film: Cast, Crew, and Release Details Announced

The highly anticipated Wind Breaker live action adaptation is officially on the way, and the production team has just wrapped up filming in Okinawa. Based on the popular delinquent-themed manga, this new cinematic project is drawing attention for its dynamic production and star-studded crew.

On Location Filming in Okinawa

Filming for Wind Breaker Live Action took place from February to April this year in Okinawa, Japan. The crew transformed a local shopping street into a full-scale open set, with each shop customized to match the gritty, action-packed world of the manga. The immersive atmosphere created on-site promises a visually compelling experience for fans.

Director and Screenwriter: A Proven Team

Helming the project is Kentarō Hagiwara, a filmmaker known for his work on Tokyo Ghoul, Blue Period, and Our 30 Minute Sessions. His cinematic vision is being brought to life through a screenplay penned by Yōsuke Masaike, a Japan Academy Prize-winning writer celebrated for titles like Anime Supremacy! and A Girl & Her Guard Dog. Together, they aim to stay true to the manga’s intensity while delivering a compelling, grounded story.

The film is being distributed by Warner Bros. Japan, adding to the growing list of successful anime-to-live-action collaborations handled by the studio.

Manga’s Global Reach and Popularity

Originally created by Nii, the Wind Breaker manga debuted in January 2021 via Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket app. The story quickly gained traction among readers who enjoy high-stakes, school-based action stories, particularly fans of titles like Tokyo Revengers.

Kodansha USA began releasing the manga digitally in English in 2022, with a print version rollout beginning July 2025. New volumes will be published monthly, helping the series gain even more international recognition.

Stage Play and Game Adaptations

The Wind Breaker franchise has already expanded beyond manga. A live stage adaptation ran in early January 2025, with performances held in both Osaka and Tokyo. Additionally, a mobile and PC game titled Wind Breaker: Furyō-tachi no Eiyūtan (Heroic Tales of Delinquents) was released on March 12, offering fans an interactive dive into the gritty world of Furin High.
